Vega Sicilia Único 2016
D.O RIBERA DEL DUERO
tempranillo Fine Ink Cabernet Sauvignon
Description
Vega Sicilia Único is the undisputed crown jewel of Spanish winemaking and one of the most legendary and sought-after wines in the world. Produced by the iconic Tempos Vega Sicilia winery in the prestigious Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin, this exceptional red wine embodies infinite patience, artisanal tradition, and the relentless pursuit of winemaking perfection.
Its rich history dates back to 1864, when Eloy Lecanda founded the estate and introduced noble Bordeaux grape varieties that adapted magnificently to the terroir and the extreme climate of Castile. The vineyards from which Único is produced have vines with an average age of 40 years, cultivated with the utmost care across a complex mosaic of 19 different soil types distributed among vineyards located between 700 and 900 metres above sea level. The classic blend is composed primarily of the native Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) grape, complemented by a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, providing superb structure, finesse and unparalleled longevity.
The production process of Vega Sicilia Único is arguably the longest, most complex and meticulous in the world for a red wine, spanning almost ten years between barrel ageing and subsequent bottle maturation. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled wooden vats. The wine then begins an ageing journey through several stages: from large wooden vats to new and used French and American oak barrels of 225 litres, before finally resting in bottle until it reaches its absolute peak. This prolonged maturation shapes a wine of infinite aromatic complexity, aristocratic elegance and legendary ageing potential that can easily exceed six decades under optimal cellaring conditions.
